# AI brief

*An Enterprise Technology Association (ETA) template. A six-part brief for any task you give an AI assistant: Ask (one request) or Partner (back and forth).*

Used in: AI Fluency: Foundations, AI Fluency: Practitioner, Microsoft Copilot at Work.

## How to use it

- Fill in the parts before you open the AI tool. Not every task needs all six, but checking each takes seconds.
- Write done criteria first if you can. They become your checklist when you review the output.
- Remove or replace sensitive details before you paste anything (see the data rules card).
- When the brief works, save it as a template with [brackets] for the parts that change.

## The brief

| Part | What to say | Your brief |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | What you want, and why | |
| Context | Background the AI can't know |   |
| Audience | Who will read or use it, what they know, how they will read it | |
| Constraints | Length, tone, must include, must avoid | |
| Format | The shape of the output: bullets, table, email, number of options | |
| Done criteria | The tests the result must pass (yes or no) | |
| Add-on: example | Something you like, labeled "style only" so facts aren't copied | |
| Add-on: role | The perspective you want the AI to take | |

## Copy-ready version

```
Goal: [what you want and why]
Context: [background the AI needs]
Audience: [who will read or use this]
Constraints: [length, tone, must include, must avoid]
Format: [bullets, table, email, number of options]
Done criteria: [the tests the result must pass]
Use only the facts I give you. Do not add facts, dates or numbers that are not in what I gave you; mark anything uncertain as [CHECK].
Before you write, ask me any questions you need answered.
```

## Before you send the prompt

- [ ] Is this tool approved for this kind of data?
- [ ] Have I removed names, numbers and details the AI doesn't need?
- [ ] Could I check the result against my done criteria?
- [ ] Do I know what stays human (final decisions, facts I'm accountable for)?
