The Ohio Cyber Reserve: Strengthening Ohio’s Cybersecurity Framework

In today’s digitally connected world, the need for strong, proactive cybersecurity measures cannot be overstated. Ohio has taken a significant step forward in this realm with the creation of the Ohio Cyber Reserve (OhCR), a unique volunteer force designed to bolster the state’s cybersecurity defenses and resilience. Established under the Ohio Adjutant General’s Department, the OhCR plays an essential role in safeguarding public and state infrastructure against ever-evolving cyber threats.

What is the Ohio Cyber Reserve?

The Ohio Cyber Reserve was founded through legislation signed by Governor Mike DeWine on October 25, 2019. This pioneering initiative emerged as part of a broader strategic effort developed by the Ohio Cyber Collaboration Committee (OC3), which brought together over 200 representatives from public, private, military, and educational sectors to build a cohesive plan for the state’s cybersecurity readiness.

The OhCR is composed of trained civilian cybersecurity professionals who volunteer their expertise to support local governments, municipalities, and state agencies in combating cyber vulnerabilities. Their mission includes:

• Conducting cybersecurity audits to identify potential weaknesses.

• Providing actionable recommendations to reduce and mitigate cyber risks.

• Offering rapid response and support in the event of a cybersecurity incident.

A Force for Good Beyond Protection

Beyond helping public entities respond to and prevent cyber incidents, the Ohio Cyber Reserve is committed to fostering cybersecurity education and workforce development across Ohio. Volunteers within the OhCR often participate in training programs for future cybersecurity professionals and collaborate with educators to mentor high school cyber clubs. By engaging in these community-focused activities, the OhCR promotes cybersecurity awareness, helps build the next generation of cyber talent, and strengthens Ohio’s overall defense ecosystem.

Get Involved with the Ohio Cyber Reserve

If you are an Ohio resident with cybersecurity expertise and a passion for public service, joining the Ohio Cyber Reserve might be the perfect way to contribute to the state’s security and resilience. Members of the OhCR not only protect critical infrastructure but also play a key role in raising awareness and preparing Ohio for the challenges of the digital future.
