Physical AI leaves the lab for the factory floor
Humanoid and mobile robots are moving from demos to paid pilots in plants and warehouses, but orders still outrun real deployments. ETA tracks verified deployments, robot-as-a-service deals, models and simulation, China's scale, trade policy and what it all means for US manufacturers, regions and workers.

China blocks SoftBank's $5.4 billion purchase of ABB Robotics (opens on Robotics 24/7)
ETA take: Robotics is now a geopolitical asset. Leaders sourcing industrial robots should map vendor ownership and supply chain exposure, not just price and specs.

GXO and Agility Robotics to add Digit humanoids at two more US warehouses in 2027 (opens on Intelligent CIO North America)
ETA take: A live Georgia site with 100,000+ totes moved is earning expansion to North Carolina and Tennessee. Repeat orders from the same customer are the signal to watch.

White House Section 232 proclamation targets robotics and industrial machinery imports, orders trade talks first (opens on Mayer Brown)
ETA take: Tariffs are deferred, not ruled out, with an update due within 180 days. Build robot and machinery cost scenarios into 2027 capital plans now.

AGCO to pilot Agility's Digit humanoid at its Hesston, Kansas plant in 2027 (opens on Robotics 24/7)
ETA take: Humanoids are reaching heartland equipment makers. Note this is a planned pilot focused on parts sorting and tote handling, not a fleet rollout.

Tesla starts early Optimus production in Fremont, warns the ramp will be slow (opens on TechCrunch)
ETA take: Production has started, but Tesla says major AI work remains before Optimus handles open-ended tasks. Treat volume targets as goals, not delivery schedules.

Humanoid orders vs. actual deployments: a reality check on commercial progress (opens on Robotics 24/7)
ETA take: Announced orders, capacity targets and shipments are not productive work. Ask vendors for uptime, intervention rates and operating hours before you sign.

AWS launches open source Physical AI Toolchain integrated with NVIDIA Isaac and Cosmos (opens on About Amazon)
ETA take: The simulate, train, deploy and update loop for robots is becoming a cloud service. That lowers the bar for manufacturers and integrators to build their own physical AI.
- MarketsInternational Federation of RoboticsSep 24, 2026
IFR: 5 million industrial robots now operate worldwide, with China installing 59% of new units (opens on International Federation of Robotics)
ETA take: Conventional automation is still the main event. US installs grew 12% in 2025, but China installed roughly nine times as many robots.
- MarketsAl JazeeraAug 19, 2026
Unitree soars in Shanghai debut as investors bet on humanoid robots (opens on Al Jazeera)
ETA take: China's first listed humanoid maker closed up 460% on day one. Capital is flowing to Chinese volume players, which will pressure pricing worldwide.
- WorkforceThe Korea TimesJun 25, 2026
Hyundai Motor union prepares strike leverage over Atlas humanoid deployment (opens on The Korea Times)
ETA take: Job guarantees tied to AI are now on the bargaining table. US plants planning humanoids, including Hyundai's Georgia Metaplant, should plan worker engagement early.
Common questions
What is physical AI?
Physical AI is AI that perceives and acts in the real world through machines such as robots, rather than only producing text or images. Building it typically combines synthetic data, model training from human demonstrations and simulated practice, simulation testing, and deployment on edge computers, the pipeline AWS packaged in its October 2026 open source Physical AI Toolchain with NVIDIA's Isaac and Cosmos tools.
Are humanoid robots actually doing paid work yet?
Yes, but in small numbers and narrow tasks. Figure 02 logged about 1,250 operating hours over roughly 10 months at BMW's Spartanburg plant, and Agility's Digit has moved more than 100,000 totes at GXO's Georgia warehouse. A Robotics 24/7 analysis cautions that announced orders and factory capacity targets far exceed verified productive deployments.
What is robot-as-a-service (RaaS)?
RaaS is a subscription model in which the vendor provides robots plus fleet management, maintenance, support and software updates, instead of selling the hardware outright. Humanoid's deployment agreement with Schaeffler and Agility's Digit contracts both use this approach, which lowers upfront cost and shifts uptime risk to the vendor.
How far ahead is China?
China installed about 354,000 industrial robots in 2025, 59% of the global total, versus almost 38,500 in the US, according to IFR data. In humanoids, Omdia ranked three Chinese firms, AgiBot, Unitree and UBTech, as the top shippers of the roughly 13,000 units shipped worldwide in 2025.
